Bio
My name is Melissa; I'm 23. I graduated from Spelman College in 2008 with a degree in psychology, and I'm currently at Columbia University, earning my Ph.D in sociomedical sciences, which is essentially a joint degree in social psychology and public health.

I have a lot of different research interests:

-racial and sexual identity, stereotyping and prejudice thereof, and the influence of these factors upon health behaviors, particularly sexual behavior and substance use
-effects of mass media, especially new media, upon adolescent and young adult sexual decision-making and risk-taking, including substance use. This includes using new media as health interventions and education tools for adolescents and young adults
-emerging adulthood in the military

Presently I'm not really sure what I'd like to do when I finish my PhD. I think I'd really love to be a psychology professor at a liberal arts college for undergraduates or a university that focuses on undergraduate education (like Princeton or Brown). I also would like to be a health sciences administrator/program director for a national funding agency or a health researcher for the CDC or another government or military agency.

When I'm not doing work stuff I like to play video games, surf the net and chat in online communities, and visit my boyfriend on his USAF base. I also used to write fanfiction when I had the time, and I like to travel, even though I don't really have the money to do so.
